hi Jamie. You are correct in saying what we call "Data Engineering" is actually nothing new. It used to be called BI Developer or ETL developer. However, with the advent of big data tools and cloud, There have been an enormous demand for Data engineers as they are the people that can work with these new set of tools. However, we have seen a shortage of people that can fill these roles because they has not been much time for people to upskill. Hence, you are right that the demand has not quadrupled but rather there is a shortage of talent in these new area due to the big data and cloud technology.
